Recent Headlines Get your Scoop on All That Is Happening A Bittersweet Riverdance Dilemma in Ireland Amidst COVID Chaos September 2023 Ireland, with its ancient lush landscapes and hearty charm, has eternally been a siren song for globetrotters. But folks, brace yourselves for a reality check - the COVID-19 nightmare has left us with a dialysis dilemma that's as bracing as that first sip of deliciously triple distilled Irish whiskey. Our good ol' AI search engine may paint a rosy picture with its comprehensive and frankly impressive list of dialysis joints in Ireland, but here's the cold, hard truth: there's no room at the inn for dialysis travelers. Since this pernicious pandemic careered into our lives, getting a shot at dialysis in Ireland feels like trying to find the illusive leprechauns pot of gold. Heres what your global robot will tell you, and again caution here, Don’t believe the hype! Yes, someone visiting Ireland can access dialysis. There are several dialysis centers across the country. Here are a few: Beacon Renal Dialysis: They operate three renal dialysis clinics in Drogheda, Tallaght, and Sandyford1. NephroCare: They have dialysis centers in Kilkenny, Limerick, and Northern Cross2. Irish Dialysis Centres: They have a list of hemodialysis units used by patients in the Republic of Ireland3. Some of the locations include Castlebar, Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Letterkenny, Limerick, Offaly, Sligo, Tralee, and Waterford3. It’s important to note that availability may vary and it’s recommended to contact the center in advance to ensure they can accommodate transient patients. Always consult with your healthcare provider before planning any travel to ensure that your health is stable and that you have all the necessary information and resources for your trip. Notwithstanding the caveat at the end, brace yourselves. The once shining Beacons of hope? Well, they're more like flickering candles now. COVID restrictions and a sudden surge in locals needing care have squeezed out the space for wandering dialysis nomads. NephroCare centers, which were supposed to be our celtic tigers, are feeling the heat too. While they've been champions of renal health, the pandemic's chokehold on resources has left them gasping for air, just like the rest of us. Even the Irish Dialysis Centres, which once promised an extensive menu of renal options across the Emerald Isle, are stuck in quicksand. Locations that once echoed with the hopes of Castlebar, Cavan, Cork, Dublin, Galway, and others have lost their melody. The truth stings, folks. Despite all the well-intentioned efforts to jig, reel and sidestep around this new normal, COVID-19's relentless grip on healthcare services has left us high and dry. Our dreams of treading softly across Yeats’ rolling Irish landscapes have been replaced by the harsh reality of healthcare limbo. So, what's a kidney-troubled globetrotter to do? Well, here's a dose of advice, seasoned with a pinch of bitterness: The Boys are definitely NOT Back in Town so keep your healthcare information provider on speed dial. Consult them before even thinking about embarking on an Irish escapade. While the beauty of Ireland may still beckon, the current circumstances have made it a cruel tease. The health and safety of travelers should never be a punchline, and yet, here we are, locked in a grim joke. For now, as we watch our travel dreams fade into the mist of uncertainty, we're left with a taste of disappointment as bitter as an overcooked shepherd's pie. The road ahead may be rocky, but hey, if we've learned anything it's that we can still find the magic in our journeys, even when life serves up a cold dish of reality.

  • Ballooning | Renal Travel Today

A Dream Hot Air Balloon Ride in Albuquerque It had been years since I last visited my brother and his family in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Life on dialysis had made long trips feel complicated, but this year, I finally felt ready to take the plunge and go on that long-overdue reunion—and with it came an unexpected adventure. Albuquerque, famous for its annual International Balloon Fiesta, offers breath taking hot air balloon rides almost year-round. The thought of floating high above the desert landscape had always fascinated me. I’d always imagined the freedom of drifting in the sky, but I was still a little nervous about fitting such an experience around my dialysis routine. To my surprise, the trip turned out to be much easier than I expected. My brother had everything planned, and after making sure I had a reliable local schedule in place with the help of the folks at renaltraveltoday.com I felt confident to enjoy my time with them to the fullest. With a few small adjustments, my treatments were seamlessly worked into the trip, leaving plenty of room for excitement and family time. The day of the hot air balloon ride was perfect. We woke up before dawn, the sky still a canvas of purples and soft oranges as we made our way to the launch site. My niece and nephew were bouncing with excitement as the colorful balloons were slowly inflated around us. I took a deep breath, feeling more at ease with each passing moment. As we climbed into the basket and the balloon slowly lifted off the ground, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. The city of Albuquerque stretched out below, and soon, the Rio Grande snaked its way through the valley, its waters sparkling in the early morning light. The Sandia Mountains loomed in the distance, their rugged peaks softened by the sunrise. The gentle floating sensation, the wide-open sky, and the quiet hum of the burner above—it was a moment of pure magic. The world below seemed to fade away as we soared higher, drifting effortlessly over the desert landscape. My brother pointed out landmarks while the kids peered over the edge, shouting in awe at the tiny cars and houses that seemed to shrink with every minute. I’d never felt so free. Up there in the sky, there was no rush, no stress—just the vast expanse of the desert and the warmth of my family around me. My dialysis routine had fit so naturally into the trip, I hadn’t even thought about it during the ride. It was simply a part of the experience, not a hindrance. We gently touched down in an open field, the basket gliding smoothly to the ground. As we stepped out and the balloon deflated behind us, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much this trip had meant to me. It wasn’t just the balloon ride, though that had been unforgettable. It was the chance to be with my family, to share an adventure I had once thought might be out of reach. That evening, after I completed my treatment and we gathered for dinner, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. My brother and I laughed over the kids’ excitement, recounting the day's adventure over and over again. The balloon ride was the highlight, but it was the ease with which everything had come together—the trip, the treatments, the adventure—that made it truly special. This journey reminded me that life on dialysis doesn’t have to mean missing out. With the right planning and support, you can embrace adventure, experience new things, and most importantly, share meaningful moments with the people you love. Albuquerque and its stunning balloon rides will always hold a special place in my heart, not just for the sights, but for the realization that life’s possibilities are still wide open, even when you’re tethered to a routine. This was a family reunion I’ll cherish forever.
